The show aims to help answer a variety of questions puzzling child viewers. Knowles and McCork are joined by a guinea pig floor-manager named Colin, who, aided by a production crew of TV robots, grapple with ‘Today's big questions’, such as ‘What Is The Oldest Living Thing?’, ‘Why Do We Dream?’and ‘Do Aliens Exist?’

The big difference from Science Fiction is the format of the show. We thought it would be great to see what it was like to have the characters interact backstage. Larry Sanders for kids.

The show stars Doctor Sorcha Knowles, a bright young scientist who somehow manages to keep the show running. A rock of sense in an otherwise chaotic work place.

Professor Mike McCork brings the slapstick to the show; Mike's inane input exasperates and baffles Sorcha, who struggles to get Mike to stay on topic.

Production

With a longer running time and much higher production value, it was quite an undertaking to get all 13 episodes finished on time. We gave the look of the show a makeover, without losing its original charm. Using puppetry alongside both 2D and 3D animation, has achieved a depth and rounded quality to the show, a believable dimension where the characters come to work, and occasionally act the maggot.
Then came set design, storyboarding, backgrounds, acting, filming on green screen and animation. The entire process involved countless hours and a group of very diverse and talented people who were a joy to work with.

I've done two so far. This one is my version of the Mutant Ninja Turtles except instead of them being 'teenage' they are 'old age', ho hilarious!
Once again created for Crossing the Line, (who, at this stage, are keeping my fridge stocked full of beer) these titles and maps were designed for a Charlie Bird programme where he retraces the journeys of famous Irish legend and explorer Tom Crean.
I enjoy doing title sequences and would hope to get more involved in this side of the business.

The Clara Bog was a project that I really enjoyed doing as it was the first and most comprehensive 3D animation piece that I have worked on so far. It was a lot of work having to solely produce everything from storyboards, concept designs, 3D animations to the finished piece but was a good challenge with a really rewarding outcome.

Clara Bog has, to my suprise, a huge variety of plants and animals and it was a lot of fun coming up with character designs for all the different creatures that live there. I tried to push myself to come up with original designs whilst at the same time trying to keep the personality of the characters. It was also a challenge to keep the charm of the rough illustrations and translate this to the cleaner versions of the 3D renders. Here in this slideshow you can view larger images of the sketches and test renders.

The animations are part of an interactive presentation where kids click on different buttons of the animal names. Here are all the sections put together into one clip.
I also put together a short making of - always wanted to do a making of after years of watching DVD extras and shows like Movie Magic!

For the past few months I've been working with a television production company called Crossing the Line. They specialise in nature, travel and historical documentaries which are amazingly produced and are really high quality, world class television shows.

I originally got my first job with them to design a poster for schools which was in conjunction with the Wild Journeys series. They where so happy with this that they asked me to rebrand their logo, and completely redo their website and also create the Wild Journeys DVD which I was delighted to see in HMV over Christmas, they had put it on the 'best of BBC' stand though!
They are a great company to work for and I am thankfully starting a new project with them in the new year which I am pretty excited about as it is a 3D animation for an interpretative center in Clara Bog.Ian Benjamin Kennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01769401917591654216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25468648.post-7177282802788617442010-11-17T08:03:00.000-10:002012-08-16T08:04:55.987-10:00THE SAUCY MEWS HAMPERS 2010

Dear All,

After much success last year and many a happy tastebud to tell the tale, The Saucy Mews Christmas Hampers are back!

The Saucy Mews is a small business I started last year, based in my home in Dun Laoghaire; It's homemade jams, chutneys and sundry delectables all made by me with the finest ingredients.
Caviston's Food Emporium in Glasthule have stocked The Saucy Mews jam and chutney range for over a year now, and serve The Saucy Mews delectable Christmas Pudding in their restaurant around Christmas time
Where possible, I use ingredients growing wild and organically in the locality, such as Wild Blackberries, Wild Crabapples, Organic Zucchini...For the rest I use the best ingredients I can lay my hands on.
Beautifully presented Boxed Hampers start at 30euros, making ideal corporate or personal gifts.
Please see attached flyer for further information on the products and how to place an order.
I worked on all the puppet/live action bits which we did on green screen. We shot the puppets' heads on a separate plate and composited them with a real person's body (my body!) It was fairly experimental and we weren't sure if it was going to work and it turned out well, I think?
I also got to create my first (paid) 3D job on it, there is a northside robot character called BudE (bring the universe down to earth) I also did up the sets.
So check it out if you get a chance, it's pretty damn funny even if you're not 8 years old!
Yet another redesign, but this one will hopefully be around for a while.

I wanted to have a proper html site as apposed to a flash one, one that I could integrate my blog and one that would be easily updateable. So at the start of the summer I set about learning Dreamweaver and it wasn't long before I realised that life is too short. Then after having a chat to my brother about the horrors of programing he sent me in the direction of Squarespace. I highly recommend this site it does all the programing for you all you have to do is design, perfect! I mean I spent the best part of a week working out how to load my blog onto my site, they have an 'import blog button'! There not free but they are worth it or at least save you from the hours of programing hell.

So now that I have a shiny new site I also will have a new rss feed (sorry blogger it was good while it lasted) and I promise to keep it updated I swear.

The first prize was to win a car but the comp was a complete sham, in the end I don't think anybody won but we had fun making it.
We slapped it together over a couple of days (as you will see with the dodgy green screen, sound etc) but with the help of Aran, Derek's little nephew (who did an amazing job in the lead role) and our make-up and costumes department (Isobel) it turned out pretty well.
